What does fear really mean? Napoleon Hill said many years ago that fear is nothing more than False Evidence Appearing Real, and he was right.
While my wife and I were dining out at one of our favorite restaurants last night, we were greeted by our waitress, who has been there a long time.
Natalia was not only a great host, she also had great people skills that always makes us feel welcome.
After being seated and getting our drinks, we sat for awhile and finally was able to order our meals.
Our meals came after 15 minutes or so, brought out by a different waitress and not complete.
My wife’s salad didn’t make the trip and we were told it’ll be right out.
After more than 10 minutes and still no salad, I went to her station and asked about it.
What Does Fear Really Mean?
“Sorry, we’re short staffed again and I’m frustrated right now and I’ll bring it to you shortly”.
I returned to our table and told my wife Trish it’ll be here in a minute.
It makes me think when someone makes excuses as to why they didn’t do something.
So I asked Natalia when she finally got the salad to our table.
You have a great personality, you’re smart and you know your job well, why are you working here?
I thought her answer was more of an excuse.
“This place is like family to me, besides if I went somewhere else they might expect more of me”.
It seemed to me that Natalia preferred this “comfort zone” rather than pursue a better job environment.
I don’t think she has been able to realize the real risks of taking a chance and is stuck in her own rut.
Those fears are real to her, but I believe they could have been overcome by thinking them out.
Here are some questions for those of you in a similar position.
- What if the tasks at a new job are familiar? Because of my experience I can handle it.
- You’ll lose your “family” at your current job. True, but it’s possible to build a new family.
- Can I learn new skills? Absolutely and you can further develop the ones that I have.
If you turn the FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) into a question, many times you will see just how unrealistic it really is.
