Boy How Things Have Changed

Boy how things have changed. The nations largest less then truckload (LTL) company YRC closed their doors this past August. While not employed by YRC, I myself suffered from bad management practices earlier this year.

“We have identified a reduction in force was necessary due to a change in business needs. Your position with the company will be eliminated.”

My last words weren’t of despair over the fear of losing my job of 12 years, but rather thanking the boss Adam Henry for the opportunity to do better.

Boy how things have changed.

Lifetime jobs have all but disappeared. The kind your grandparents or even your parents had.

You know, the ones where you worked at ONE job for your entire career and retired.

My father in law worked for the USPS for 37 years before he retired.

And the pandemic has affected the way we do business forever, more companies are focusing on work from home and remote jobs.

My neighbors do this, but people with traditional jobs like me are always wondering.

Are we living in the last generation?

Are you working hard, coming home tired every day and still short on payday?

Here’s how to approach affiliate marketing if you’re considering starting a home business and you think that an affiliate marketing program is the best way to begin.

Affiliate marketing is the best way for anyone to make money online from home.

It’s easy to start, and the potential to make money fairly quickly is possible.

And the best part is that for a one time price of your favorite Starbucks, you can to get started immediately.

OK, I’ll give up my daily Starbucks and click this image just this one time!

However, there’s a lot more involved than just a great program.

There are other considerations below that you need to address first.

How to approach affiliate marketing

1. How many e-mail lists do you subscribe to?

When you open your marketing email, your inbox and spam folders are filled with a bunch of “the next best thing” offers.

Simply starting a home business is easy, compared to a retail business, but that doesn’t mean it will happen overnight.

In fact, most people usually quit after a short time because nothing happens.

2. Do not jump from one ‘sure thing’ to the next.

Just like being on too many guru’s email lists and suffering from information overload, you will never find success jumping from one program to another.

The only one making money is the product owner because you’re spending money on all of these “sure things”.

Find the ONE program you like, learn all you can about it and stick with it.

Realize that you may not make any sales immediately since it will take some time to generate traffic.

But if you’re willing to show up everyday, you will start to see more progress and sales as you grow.

3. For most people, just promote ONE product.

Think about this…

Imagine if you have one page where you sell ten products.

And you have the potential to make a commission of $20 for each product you sell.

You will need to sell 10 different products instead of just focusing on ONE product or service.

In fact, each product needs it’s own page, sales funnel and autoresponder setup so you can market it.

Don’t kid yourself, even full time experienced marketers would have trouble managing 10 unique sites.

Just start with ONE product, learn how to market and make money from it, then consider scaling.

4. Don’t believe that all you have to do is post a link and collect money.

LOL, if it were truly that easy, everyone participating would become rich overnight.

Bottom line: You need to learn current internet marketing techniques.

Learn which method is currently used on social media that generates all the traffic you need.

It’s best to decide on ONE traffic generation method, learn it and start driving traffic.

Once you master that traffic source, then consider a second method.

One that you can learn and master as well.

When you approach affiliate marketing, there are no shortcuts.

Let me mention that some internet marketing techniques are easy to learn while others are difficult.

You really must understand the process or you may not earn anything.

To help you start affiliate marketing and be successful, here are a few steps to follow.

1. Choose a niche

In popular niches, affiliate marketing is very competitive.

You have a better chance of making sales from popular in demand products or services.

Consider using the product or service that you are interested in, nothing builds a great relationship with your audience than actual experience.

Furthermore, explaining how you use the product or service is something most affiliates don’t do.

If you blog, your content should talk about how you using the product or service.

For example, if you’re into keto, you can talk about how the program and/or supplements are part of your daily regimen.

There are always people wanting to know more about keto and that’s how you can help them.

Get them on your email list so you can deliver valuable tips, advice and what’s currently working for you.

2. Research the market

Research the market to ensure that there are people willing to pay for it.

Start by utilizing Google to identify some of the products currently selling online.

Create a list of contenders with pro’s and con’s, plus or minus, free or paid etc.

Within minutes, you will be able to determine which products offer the best value.

For example, some affiliates will buy, use and promote a popular product or service and write or talk about their experience with it.

You can create valuable content based on your observations, pro’s and con’s about the product etc.

3. Analyze the competition

Where are you at compared to the competition?

You need to determine how well the competition is doing in the program you are interested in.

Again, make a list from the results of your due diligence.

Deep dive into those sites you really like and study how they do affiliate marketing.

Opt-in to their email list and check out how they approach and interact with you.

Do their emails deliver free, value based information about the product without being salesy?

When you find someone who is successful doing what you are seeking to do, model them.

4. Researching available affiliate programs

By now, you should have determined which program will work for you.

These programs should offer you everything you need to become their affiliate.

The back office will provide everything you need, products, links, banners, swipe files etc.

All that is left for you to do now is to drive traffic to your custom affiliate link.

5. Pick your affiliate marketing method

You can choose from several affiliate marketing methods.

For blogging, you need to build a website using either free or paid hosting services.

Personally, I would recommend a paid hosting account over a free one.

You can still market with a free website, but you are extremely limited to what you can do.

If you do videos and reels, then Instagram and TT are great ways to introduce yourself.

6. Create and publish content

Start by producing valuable content and publish it on your website.

Or you can make short reels and videos to post on your favorite social media account.

Work on becoming consistent with your content and always give your readers (and subscribers) the quality content they need to make their choice.

Your value based content will drive more focused traffic to your (link) or website.

Plus your building your audience and email list of people who are seeking the solution to their problem.
